Library Terminology for Patrons

I’m currently taking Diane Kovac’s course Electronic Collection Development for the Academic E-Library  from ACRL, and in one of the lectures she posted a link to John Kupersmith’s best practice guide to using terminology that patrons understand. Note that “Database,” “E-Journal,” and “Catalog” are all terms that patrons report not to understand.

    Curtis,

I like the blog- I am in your ACRL class, but a little behind in my work. How big is your university? You and I have a few things in common regarding our work titles, duties, etc.

    I’ll see you ‘in class’

    Thanks, Nathan.

I’m also behind on my work for the ACRL class. In fact, I’m behind on everything, including responding to commnets on the blog.

Fairfield has about 4,200 FTE. But I think our library has some great resources for a school our size.

Did you make it to the ACRL conference?

I certainly plan to. I like that conference quite a bit. Plus, it’s in Seattle, which is a town I like quite a bit. Will you be going?
