Hi John,

These are some interesting thoughts. I'll be curious to see if we get some similar feedback from our students. Advanced search functionality was something we considered when evaluating Encore, and some of our staff hope it will be part of future Encore iterations. But, I'm not so sure that an advanced search feature is necessary in a product like Encore. The representatives we met with stated that this tool isn't really designed to incorporate Boolean based search queries-- rather, it is designed to make basic searching easier. And, I think it does this. In my own anecdotal experience, I'm not sure how much our students use Boolean queries. Most students I have talked to what a search tool that works like Google. And, I think the Encore design takes this into consideration, giving searching a Google feel, but with much more robust functionality.

And, our students (and librarians) still have access to the advanced search feature built into our Sirsi catalog. Whether this advanced search is "self-evident, direct and familiar" is a matter of debate (i vote not). But, that's a Sirsi problem rather than an Encore problem.

But hopefully our users are filling out the survey we have posted and letting us know what they think of Encore, and whether it's meeting their needs.

Faceted browsing tools like Encore are a great addition. However, I think there are a couple of things to keep in mind:

 1. Tools like Encore support browsing and discovery and need to have a complementary 'advanced search' function for known-item searching and searching within one or more known parameters.
 2. The 'advanced search' needs to be well formed -- i.e., self-evident, direct and familiar -- and specific to the academic community served (i.e., appropriately robust to fully aide your community's research needs/goals).

It has been the experience of the library where I work that the implementation of Encore has made graduate students and faculty more vocal about better 'advanced search'. To those considering Encore, one recommendation might be to examine the 'advanced search' currently available, look at what other libraries are doing, make improvements where needed, and go live with the improved 'advanced search' when you go live with Encore.
